Presentation of the book „Liquid Evil“ in the Jewish community of Zagreb
On Tuesday, March 26th, in the crowded Hall of Cultural Society „Miroslav Shalom Freiberger“ we presented the book Liquid Evil by Zygmunt Bauman and Leonidas Donskis.
In this book, formed as a debate between the authors, evil is discussed as a phenomenon that has been with mankind since the beginning of time. In our liquid-modern world it takes on a liquid form, penetrating into all aspects of man's life and existence. Unlike the previous, solid modernity evil, the liquid evil of our new reality is omnipresent, and therefore less obvious – it has become both more ordinary and more insidious, threatening to strip humanity of its dreams, alternative projects and powers of dissent at the very time when they are needed most. The book was introduced by the editor Dijana Bahtijari, and prof. dr. sc. Žarko Puhovski gave a very interesting lecture, talking about how evil – quite successfully – camouflaged itself into the form of social networks, nationalism, populism, it overflows from one into the other, flooding our modernity. He also criticises Donskis and his statement that Eastern European dissidents never used hatred and power, calling the statement contradictory, at the very least.
Passages from the book, chosen by prof. dr. sc. Puhovski, were read by Vlatka Bjegović.
