On Republican tradition and historical lessons
A review of the book Nationalists and Patriots by Maurizio Viroli was published in the cultural magazine Mediteran in Novi list on July 4. Reviewer Jaroslav Pecnik described about the book:
Recently, a modest book by Italian university professor Maurizio Viroli, titled Nationalists and Patriots, appeared in our bookstores, published by the already proven Zagreb publisher for this type of literature TIM press and translated from Italian by Prof. Dr. Damir Grubiša which, although popularly written, and perhaps precisely because of that, provides a simple but also relevant insight into the issues it deals with, and elaborates republican political thought and tradition opposed to the nationalist concept, so we can freely say it speaks about the days and times in which our society not only in a narrowly national / regional, but also in a wider European context, is going through a severe identity crisis.
In his book, Viroli analyzes and cites numerous examples from contemporary political theory; however, in order to explain his ideas as clearly as possible and bring them closer to a wider circle of readers, he relies on a number of current examples, events and personalities from contemporary politics, but also the society as such.
