New title – „Pluralising humanism“
Following Both Freedom and Belonging, Slavica Jakelić’s first book published by TIM press, we bring you her new title, translated by Marko Maras. While in her first book the author analysed insights from sociology, religious studies, history and political philosophy and examined and connected religions, nationalisms and solidarity, in her new book, Pluralizing Humanism, she focuses on the potential of humanism in the struggle against dehumanisation in the contemporary world. The author asks whether humanism still has a future in the 21st century and answers this important question in the affirmative, but on one condition: humanism must be pluralised. Drawing on two historical examples from the 1980s – the Solidarity movement in Poland and the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa – she shows a struggle for freedom carried not by one humanism, but by many. Their encounter gave rise to unexpected alliances between religious and secular actors, forms of solidarity that changed the political face of the modern world. Interdisciplinary, theoretically bold and grounded in careful research, this book is intended for everyone working in the social sciences, social theory, religious studies and ethics. It is equally valuable for readers interested in religion, secularism and social movements, and for all those who, despite divisions, are committed to the common good.
