On writing as humanity's greatest invention
Branimir Pofuk's interview with Venko Andonovski, the author of the novel Alphabet for the Disobedient, latest edition of the House of Good Books, has been published in Večernji list. About this work, its importance and his reflections that inspired him, the author pointed out:
I think we are slowly waking up, and that's good because we are realizing the importance of the beginnings of literacy. We live in an era of such digital progress, when literacy is taken for granted to such an extent that it has become invisible. Well, it is precisely this deficit of feeling about the letter and the hand that writes – that is triggering the awareness of the importance of the mission of Cyril and Methodius. This can also be seen in the fact that in Europe, and not only among the Slavic nations, there is a growing awareness for languages, for their uniqueness. First of all, it is about one semiotic self-consciousness of the people: they look at the world differently because language is the first “tailor“ of the world in terms, and languages are different tailors of terms. Languages differ not only in grammar and vocabulary, but also in understanding of the world.
