The Individual in the Crowd
- Political reflections
- Mirko Galić
The Individual in the Crowd. Political Reflections brings together writings spanning several years, conceived as both a chronicle of a particular era and a meditation on Croatia’s achievements and challenges, its perspectives and hopes. Drawing on his vast personal experience and knowledge, the author also turns to a wide range of sources and literature to portray as accurately as possible the state of affairs and political developments in Croatia. In this sense, the book serves as a valuable resource for understanding the times we live in and the country we inhabit. These essays approach major events, phenomena, and figures from multiple angles, focusing primarily on Croatia but also on other countries connected with it—especially on Europe and European politics. Covering a broad spectrum of current topics, the author treats them with journalistic rigor and insight, painting a realistic picture of Croatia’s state, society, and culture, as well as its spiritual, economic, and political dynamics. The Individual in the Crowd is a book about today’s Croatia—and about the Croatia that ought to be.
* * *
The worst possible thing is happening for a small and young country and an underdeveloped society – that scum join forces with stupidity and ignorance and together they create the most powerful caste that even the government, which is much more capable, can do nothing about. By imposing the past, it turns its head away from current problems and sacrifices the future to a generation that is rebelling without knowing what and for whom it is doing it. Croatia has entered a paranoid state that its young people are leaving and that it cannot maintain its cold engine without foreigners. Patriotism is a nice phrase, the state is an empty shell, and faith is a fraud if people cannot tolerate each other, if they only think of an abstract state and not a real one in which two-thirds of the citizens believe that politics does not think of them.

The book The Individual in the Crowd provides an exceptionally broad insight into a number of issues and problems crucial for the development of Croatia as a European and democratic country. This is one of its greatest qualities, as it covers topics related not only to the relationship between politics and the media, or the public, but also topics such as party and foreign policy, issues of literature and other cultural products, as well as myths and historical stereotypes that are of particular importance in this region.
