Marko Šundov's book The Economy of Meaning offers an analysis of economic and social reality in an original, innovative, provocative and above all interesting way and provides suggestions, guidelines and solutions for the pressing economic problems of the modern world. The work abounds in new and original concepts and ideas such as the economy of meaning, prudent economy, process profitability and creative evolution, all for the purpose of an analytical approach to the urgent need to change the existing economic system – meaningless, unsustainable and unjust, which leads to the destruction of the individual, the community and nature.
The innovativeness of the work in approaching complex issues is reflected in its interdisciplinary focus, and Šundov emphasizes that the importance of individual freedoms must be part of the national identity and values of a certain space without imposing global interest elites. Building global relations on the platform of networked and equal communities is the foundation of the new post-neoliberal globalization – a prerequisite for a more just and secure world. This book, with its content and themes, opens up the possibility of further questioning and discussion about where the world is heading in the 21st century and what role the modern individual plays in it.

* * *

The economy of the 21st century must focus on shifting the balance of the individual between the desire (craving) for possessions (instantaneous/short-term pleasure) and the real needs of reality (what the individual can realistically achieve in accordance with his potential, without violating his own personality). This is a return to an economy of meaning, which is built to serve man and is adapted to his capacities. Such an economy does not exclude or create losers, it is adaptive and purposeful to the wider social community. To be able to do this, this new economy of the 21st century must evenly develop the ecological, social and economic part of society without questioning the viability of each of them.

The Economy of Meaning is a scientifically valuable work that reaffirms many ideas of classical critical and modern sociological thought, while necessarily challenging some by including a critical approach to society in the paradigm of sustainable development. A holistic approach to the topic shows how difficult it is to achieve such a reality and can latently leave a „bitter taste“ despite the noticeable approach of hope and insistence on the capacities of people who need to be made aware and thus promote individual, mutual and collective subjectivity.

In the book The Economy of Meaning, Marko Šundov dismantles and exposes the existing socio-economic model that holds all of us, free, democratic citizens, as deaf and blind hostages. He does all this for the sake of profitability and profitability, ignoring the past, present and future. That is precisely why such „combat“ manuscripts are necessary because they force us to look and hear everything that is known, but often neglected or even ignored due to laziness and other selfish reasons.
