Memoirs
- based on conversations with Rachel Salamander, edited and annotated by Christian Wiese
- Hans Jonas
A philosophical treat is in the works at TIM press! The memoirs of Hans Jonas, one of the most important philosophers of the 20th century, will soon be available in Croatian, translated by Hrvoje Jurić. Although some of Jonas’s works are regarded as classics of philosophy, and he has been written about in philosophical circles since the 1990s, his books have, as Jurić notes, been almost unavailable in Croatian. Jonas’s long and rich life produced works and reflections on a wide range of subjects, from Gnosticism and the philosophy of life, the philosophy of religion, bioethics and the ethics of responsibility in his best-known work, The Imperative of Responsibility (Das Prinzip Verantwortung, 1979), which made him an intellectual superstar in Germany in his eighties. By examining the gap between humankind’s enormous technological capabilities and its weakening moral sensibility, Jonas created a work that is more relevant today than ever. Memoirs was published to mark the hundredth anniversary of Jonas’s birth and the tenth anniversary of his death. It grew out of conversations with Jonas conducted and recorded by the journalist and literary scholar Rachel Salamander, and the book was edited by the German theologian Christian Wiese. This valuable book tells the story of the author’s life, while also portraying German Jewry in the Weimar Republic, German Zionism, Jewish émigrés in Palestine in the 1930s and 1940s, and German-Jewish intellectuals in New York. Jonas also traces the development of his work, from his studies under Husserl and Heidegger to his late metaphysical reflections. Engaging and highly readable, this book is an introduction to the eventful life of Hans Jonas, enriched with valuable notes, insights and interpretations by the distinguished Croatian philosopher Hrvoje Jurić.
