How democratic left can slow down nationalism

Jutarnji list published a review of the book Nationalists and Patriots by political scientist Maurizio Viroli, a work that in a political-sociological way deals with the historical phenomena of nationalism, its relationship and the consequences of this relationship to social problems:

„‛If it wants to stop nationalism’, Viroli argues, ‛the democratic left must first find an answer to the need for a national identity, over which it has always left a monopoly to the right.’ In order to do that, it must appreciate the national culture and legitimate interests of every citizen, but also elevate both to the ideals of free and civilized life, because it is a republican patriotism that unites the nation, political freedom and social justice. With this attitude, Viroli once again stands out as one of the leading advocates of republicanism in contemporary political doctrine.“
