New title – „The Future of Dying“

A new philosophical treat from TIM press brings a brave and thoughtful confrontation with death in a time that wants to forget it.

For thousands of years, only the gods were immortal. People died – always, inevitably, most often in pain. Today, science and technology have a new plan: to abolish mortality itself. Some experts and transhumanists advocate the extension of healthy lifespans, dreaming of a world in which people live for a hundred years – active, healthy and autonomous – before passing away peacefully. But the reality is different: shortly after retirement, a gradual decline often begins, which can last for decades.

What if aging is not just a biological process, but also an existential question? Does decline prepare us for death? How is our view of the end of life changing in a society that increasingly avoids the very thought of dying? And can we – or should we – overcome death at all? In The Future of Dying, philosopher Marli Huijer explores how contemporary society understands aging, care, and death. Combining philosophical reflection and the latest scientific insights, it asks a key question: how do we want to die in the future – and what kind of world do we need to build to make that possible?
