This textbook was created on the basis of lectures and seminars from the course Building Theory in Sociology at the study of sociology at the University of Zadar and, before that, at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb. The course, like this book, was independently designed and the selected contents were included in the book according to the concept of the mentioned course. Of course, male and female students, teachers, researchers and other interested users of this textbook can expand the offered topics in their work or choose similar or completely new ones. To this end, recommended literature has been added to each chapter in the book.

The book Theory in Sociology. The ideal, the real, the ideological, the utopian by Vjeran Katunarić and Marija Šarić is an extremely important scientific and scientific-pedagogical project. In one place, problematically articulated, with introductory explanations and adequate reference literature, it offers the opinions of the most relevant contemporary sociologists on the construction of theory in sociology. It also actualizes and affirms the importance of theory in sociology, but also sociological science in general, and at the same time contributes to the understanding of this science and especially its position in the higher education system and scientific culture in general.

In short, it is a valuable material not only for the study of sociology but also for a general introduction to sociological science. If we want to find out what theory is in sociology, how it is founded and developed and what some eminent sociologists think about it, we will reach for this book.

The introduction of very important aspects in the approach to the construction of theories, which are not represented in the usual reviews of sociological theories, is a feature of this book. At the same time, it provides insight into texts that illustrate a particular topic covered in each chapter and contributes to the increase of the corpus of translations in sociology and related theories of society. The publication of this book will fill the lack of Croatian-language literature on theory of sociology and offer the possibility not only of critically examining existing sociological theories and traditions but also of the relationship between theory and empiricism in the study of social phenomena.

The authors also introduce examples of empirical studies in the explanation of individual theories, so it becomes obvious that the choice of theoretical starting points sets a key „framework for research“ of social phenomena.
