Ivan Koprić's collection of poetry Red Isohypses of War contains 64 thematically and stylistically uniformed poems whose common denominator is the fear of death, disappearance, meaninglessness, futility and the end. The poems were created during the pandemic, the war in Ukraine, after the devastating earthquake in Zagreb and central Croatia, and the health, security and energy problems and crises associated with these events, which show relentless resilience. They are arranged alphabetically, from „Assimilation“ to „Froging“, which suggests the cataloging of situations, events and processes that bring risks, dangers, uncertainty and insecurity, and often the continuity of senseless, unnatural and unexpected killing and dying. The author explores the possibilities of language to reflect dangers and forebodings in the register of grays and decomposition of known elements of social and personal landscapes and, playing with the unusual and suggestive phrases, he transforms shocking external stimuli into dominantly pessimistic hints.
